A look back at the launch day of the Lyon Saint-Étienne data management cluster
The Lyon Saint-Étienne data management cluster, DATALystE, was inaugurated on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the École Centrale de Lyon, marking its membership in the Recherche Data Gouv ecosystem, as a certified data management cluster since January 2025.
This event brought together nearly a hundred people involved in DATALystE, or interested in joining the workshop. The event was attended by Nathalie Dompnier, President of the ComUE of Lyon (which spearheaded DATALystE), Christophe Corre, Director of Research and Innovation at the École Centrale de Lyon, and Gilles Mathieu, Deputy Director of Coordination and Operations at Recherche Data Gouv.
Beyond emphasizing the importance of supporting the opening and sharing of research data, this highlight provided an opportunity to retrace the first steps of the DATALystE workshop since its creation in 2022 and
to mark its developments over the past three years, including:
- a functional and active governance structure composed of a steering committee and a scientific council,
- a continually expanding scope of partners,
- a one-stop shop that is visible and adopted by the community,
- finalized services and tools (such as the Horodata escape game or the Whisper transcription tool),
- a website with practical fact sheets and memos.
In addition to a presentation of DATALystE in the national context of open science, the morning was punctuated by valuable discussions thanks to the roundtable discussion "Opening and Reusing Research Data: Feedback."

Another highlight of this inauguration was a sharing of the progress of the four working groups led by the workshop: internal and external communication, support and training, data processing, and legal and infrastructure issues. These small group sessions allowed for the emergence of new needs, such as:
- Develop the DATALystE's services to better address the specificities of the exact sciences;
- Create recommendations and support dedicated to health data;
- Develop a service for data papers;
- Structure and manage a network of data correspondents within laboratories;
- Establish a unified reporting system for datasets from various disciplines within the same project, but stored in different thematic repositories.
These elements will also contribute to the redesign of the DATALystE roadmap, currently being updated by the Scientific Council.
Also, in parallel with these sessions, the Data Curator escape game, developed by the École Centrale de Lyon as part of DATALystE, was offered to participants.
The day concluded with a word of thanks from Loïc Bonneval, who reflected on his more than two years as DATALystE's Scientific Advisor and his extensive involvement in the development and structuring of the workshop. Finally, Sylvie Charlot, who succeeded him as the new Scientific Advisor since September 1, 2025, closed the day with a few words of introduction and expressed her satisfaction at joining and contributing to the future of DATALystE.
