The REAlang research project aimed to assess the performance of Year 5 pupils (aged 8–9) at the end of compulsory schooling (aged 14–15) in terms of their fundamental grammar and spelling skills, with a focus on the use of verbs and adjectives

The overall objective of REAlang was to report on the reality of language teaching and learning in school. The specific methodological issue addressed was the design and use of different performance variables (pupil performance within a defined area) in order to identify classes and levels and so better understand teaching practices.

A methodological framework for the REAlang research project was developed which:

  • was based upon solid quantitative data;
  • proposed tests that could be replicated and that are easy to use in the classroom (i.e. clear instructions are provided, materials are easily accessible for teachers and pupils, and they are not time-consuming);
  • organised two rounds of testing in the classes involved, one at the beginning of the school year (September-October) and one in the middle (January for REAlang) or at the end of the school year (April-May for REAlang²).

This system has provided a set of data and elements that may be used for comparison with existing data or to develop more targeted research on classes, student follow-ups, and training applications.
