How to choose a data repository ?

Updated at: 02/06/2022

To share or open research data, it is necessary to deposit them in a data repository that will make them more visible and accessible.

In the case of disciplines structured for data sharing (astronomy, genomics, etc.), data producers have access to repositories specific to their discipline. They will naturally use the standards and best practices already in place to document and format their data.

Alternatively, data producers can turn to the institutional repository they are affiliated with, if it exists, or use the multidisciplinary repository Recherche Data Gouv.

Minimal requirements will be imposed by these trusted repositories to ensure that the data is FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), particularly through the assignment of a persistent unique identifier (for example, a DOI).

In cases where the data supports a scientific publication and for evidence purposes, it is important to choose a repository such as Recherche Data Gouv, which allows reliable and permanent access to the version of the dataset used to obtain the results.

The practice of its community is the best guide, but directories of these repositories exist. The re3data re3data directory lists repositories and allows filtering by several criteria (e.g., discipline, assignment of a persistent identifier to datasets, types of data or accepted formats, long-term data preservation, choice of license, etc.).

For any questions, please contact the local data management cluster or reach out to the Recherche Data Gouv platform resource center.
