Play cultures and practices in France: the case of board games (ELIPSS 2017)

Updated at: 04/03/2024
State of play and overview of the practice of board games in France.

The “Game Cultures and Play Practices in France: a survey of board games“ (LUDENQUETE) survey wishes to depict the situation and give a precise panorama of board games use in France, both in a proper leisure environment and in domestic settings. Its main objective was to draw a cartography of board games uses in France and analyze the diversity and exact place of these practices by the French population, amongst other game practices as well as cultural practices in general. Other than a precise cartography of uses, the survey aimed at analyzing the cultural and social aspects of board games, through the prism of widely accepted models from sociology of culture. Questions were about game practices in general, board games sociability, practices of board games and their frequency, the relation to the game.

A game culture test was also administered to panelists.

The LUDENQUETE survey was administered in April and May 2017, during the enlarged phase of ELIPSS.
