Survey on research data at the University of Strasbourg and Université Côte d'Azur

In this dataset, you will find not only what you need to replicate the survey in your organization, but also what you need to compare your results with those of two universities and explore the results in other ways. Explore this dataset to know more about practices and perceptions among researchers, before open science policies have been established. You can repeat the survey at your own institution, or even compare your results with the results found in this survey in 2 French universities.

The dataset entitled "Responses Research Data Survey Universit y of Strasbourg and Université Côte d'Azur" in .ods' format includes 496 complete responses to an online survey about researchers' practices regarding their research data. The survey, administered with Lime Survey between November 2019 and February 2020, was sent to all doctoral students and staff involved in research activities at the Université de Strasbourg et Université Côte d'Azur.


Nature: The anonymized file contains numerous qualitative data on the following aspects:

  1. characteristics of the respondent (status, age group, disciplinary field, responsibilities, gender)
  2. type of data
  3. management (storage, archiving, description) of the data
  4. use and sharing of the data (including disincentives and intentions to share)
  5. needs (training, etc.)


Outreach: The interest of this dataset is that it concerns all scientific disciplines and that it was collected at the local level of two universities, which allows for a comparative analysis between institutions. In th is spirit, and in order to facilitate the collection of similar data, an improved version of the questionnaire is freely available and importable into Lime Survey. This version can be easily used and/or adapted to other institutions (the questionnaire has been adapted to the case of the universities of Nantes and Le Mans, as well as INRAE and the Synchrotron SOLEIL).


This dataset is associated with the following complementary files:

  • Readme.txt file to explain its use (file necessary for the exploitation of the dataset)
  • html version of the original questionnaire in English and in French (idem : file necessary)
  • Improved questionnaire in .lss format importable in Lime Survey
