The curation process

Curation of the collection concerned is carried out by its designated curators. This can take place before or after the dataset is published, depending on the default role assigned to the dataset's creator as regards her/his dataset.

  • If the dataset creator has been assigned a default collaborator's role, the creator cannot publish the dataset directly and must instead submit it to a collection curator for review and publication. Curation work is carried out before publication.
  • If a default curator's role has been assigned to the dataset creator, the creator can publish the dataset directly. Curation by a collection curator takes place after publication.

In the institutional spaces of the Recherche Data Gouv Repository, the collection administrator(s) shall choose the curation method to be applied, set up curation modalities and designate curators for the collections.

In the generic space of the Recherche Data Gouv Repository, curation is carried out before publication by a team of curators from the Repository-Registry resource centre.

The curator makes minor corrections involving form, syntax or spelling and suggests improvements to the dataset to the depositor. Several exchanges with the depositor may be required before the dataset can be approved. A curation report will be sent to the depositor to indicate and follow up on the curator's modifications and suggestions. If you require an editable version of the curation report, please contact support-recherchedatagouv@inrae.fr.

Length of curation work

Curation work is carried out as soon as possible whatever process is involved. However, when the 'curation before publication' process is selected, the curator will also ensure the depositor makes any recommended changes so that the dataset can be published within one year unless it is justified to take longer.

After this one-year period, the curator or administrator can delete the dataset.

Curation of a dataset before publication

When a depositor submits a dataset for review, this dataset will be labelled "En révision" ("Under review") in the collection:

Example of a dataset submitted for review

The curator is notified by e-mail and in her/his personal space in the repository.

Notification in the user's personal space

The curator will then check the data according to the level of curation selected.

S/he can:

  • either make minor corrections if necessary, publish the dataset and e-mail the curation report mentioning the corrections made to the depositor;
  • or return the dataset to the depositor via the interface and suggest improvements in her/his curation report sent by e-mail.

Publish the dataset or return it to the author

Once the dataset has been published, if the depositor wishes to make any further modififications, the dataset will have to be reviewed again by the curator.

Curation of a dataset after publication

After publication, curation is of course carried out on published datasets which requires active monitoring by the curators. E-mail notifications help identify published datasets. Curation can be monitored by using a common collection file.

Once the dataset has been identified the curator can:

  • either make minor corrections if necessary, publish the dataset once more and e-mail the curation report mentioning the corrections made to the depositor;
  • or suggest improvements in her/his curation report sent by e-mail.
