Presentation of the repository

The Recherche Data Gouv repository enables the French scientific community to publish research data from public research and is based on the Dataverse open source software solution.

FAIRDepositing data in the Recherche Data Gouv repository complies with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). Certain ways of supporting the implementation of these principles are highlighted in this guide.

By depositing in the repository, depositors agree to respect the General Terms and Conditions and thus to contribute to the quality of the repository. Depositors are responsible for the data, metadata and content they publish.

Organisation of contents

The Recherche Data Gouv repository contains datasets organised in tree-like Dataverse collections.

Organisation of the contents

What is a dataset?

A dataset is a coherent set of raw or derived data with metadata associated to it to describe the data (presentation, publication date, perennial identifier, keywords, geographical coverage, period of coverage, etc.). The data in the set can be in different formats such as texts, figures, images, etc. and a file can be linked to the dataset.

A DOI is automatically assigned to each dataset deposited in the Recherche Data Gouv repository.

What is a collection?

A collection is a space dedicated to the datasets of a community (a laboratory, research project, etc.) or a theme.

Each collection may contain:

  1. Dataverse sub-collections
  2. Datasets
  3. Files

types of content

What is an institutional space?

An institutional space is a collection created following a request from a French research organisation which then manages and curates the space by delegation. An institutional space contains datasets that can be grouped into collections or sub-collections.

What is the generic space?

The term 'generic space' designates the collection where depositors without an institutional space can deposit their datasets. The generic space does not contain any collections. The generic space can contain collections for research units if none of the parent institutions has its own owns an institutional space. To create this kind of collection, please complete the request form.

A carousel on the home page gives users direct access to collections associated with institutions (institutional spaces), and to the generic space.

Curation of datasets

Datasets are curated to guarantee a minimum level of quality. This involves a series of checks of the conformity and completeness of certain metadata and documentation, the validity of links and so forth. Curation may be carried out before and/or after publication of the dataset. The depositing author may be asked to make modifications after these checks. For more information, see the Curators' charter.

How support is organised

If an author of the dataset belongs to an institutional space, the support team of this space will assist the depositor as necessary. If several authors are attached to several institutional spaces, the authors will agree which support team to turn to.

If this is not the case the depositor can benefit from support from the repository's resource centre.

The Data management clusters can also provide local support throughout the data's lifetime. To find out which Data management cluster can support you, please consult the Recherche Data Gouv portal.
