Guide to entering geospatial metadata
Geospatial metadata
Geographical coverage
Information on the data's geographical coverage including the total geographical scope of the data. (Recommended)
The Country/Nation field is obligatory if any of the following metadata in the block is entered:
- Country/Nation: Country or nation the dataset refers to; (Recommended)
- State/Province: State, province, department or region the dataset refers to. You can use GeoNamesto obtain the right spelling and thus avoid abbreviations.
- City: Name of the city the dataset refers to. You can use GeoNamesto obtain the right spelling and thus avoid abbreviations.
- Other: Other level of coverage (e.g. continent, catchment area) or degree of precision of previous fields (e.g. neighbourhood of the town indicated). Depending on the object involved, youcan use GeoNames to obtain the right spelling and thus avoid abbreviations.
Click on the (+) button to add another geographical zone to the dataset.
Example:
- Country/Nation: France
- State/Province: Occitania
- City: Montpellier
- Other: Verdanson
Geographical unit
The lowest level of geographical grouping the dataset covers. e.g. village, country, region. (Optional)
Click on the (+) button to add a geographical unit.
Example: A section of a waterway for polylines; Structure or logjam for points.
Geographical boundary rectangle
The minimum zone defined by West and East longitudes and North and South latitudes which makes up the largest geographical spread of the dataset's geographic coverage. Please use decimal degrees (e.g. -1.2949, 47.7718, etc.). Values used have to be within the following ranges: latitude (South/North) [-90; 90] and longitude (West/East) [-180; 180]. (Recommended)
All four fields must be filled in if any of the metadata set out just below is entered.
Note 1: The English term 'Bounding Box' is often used for this geographical boundary rectangle.
Note 2: To find this rectangle, you can use tools like https://boundingbox.klokantech.com Please remember to select 'Dublin Core' under 'Copy & Paste' to make sure coordinates are in the correct format.
Please use this tool to check a bounding box that has already been filled in: https://harrywood.co.uk/maps/uixapi.
- West Longitude: The west-most coordinate (in decimal degrees) that delimits the geographic extent of the dataset. Value between -180.0 and 180.0.
- East longitude: The east-most coordinate (in decimal degrees) that delimits the geographical extent of the dataset. Value between -180.0 and 180.0.
- North Latitude: The most northerly coordinate (in decimal degrees) that delimits the geographical extent of the dataset. Value between -90.0 and 90.0.
- South latitude: The southernmost coordinate (in decimal degrees) that delimits the geographical extent of the dataset. Value between -90.0 and 90.0.
Click on the (+) button to add a geographic bounding rectangle.
Example:
- West longitude: -5.45
- East longitude: 9.87
- North latitude: 51.27
- South latitude: 41.26
Quality and validity
Overall quality of the geographic data set. (Optional)
- Genealogy: The processing history and/or general quality of the geographical data set. When applicable, please indicate whether the series has been approved or gone through a quality control process, whether it is the official version (if several versions exist) and whether it has any legal value.
- Spatial resolution: Level of detail of the resource.
This must be expressed according to the type of data:
- as a resolution distance e.g. 2m (typically for mesh data or image-based products)
- or in equivalent scales e.g. 5000 for 1/5000 (typically for maps or derived resources).
Click on the (+) button to add another quality and validity section.
Example 1:
- Genealogy: The data were derived from BDTopo Building data in 2011 and in 2021 by applying automated matching and manual revisions
- Spatial resolution: 10m
Example 2:
- Genealogy: For anonymisation purposes, the coordinates of the centre of the municipality are assigned to the plots located there.
- Spatial resolution: 1/1000
Compliance
Level of compliance with the conditions set out in by the specification involved. Compliance with several data specifications may be entered.
- Specification: Reference to the implementation rules adopted (e.g. art. 7-1 of Directive 2007/2/EC or other specifications).
- Degree: The resource's degree of compliance with the specification given in the previous metadata.
Click on the (+) button to add compliance with a specification.
Example:
- Specification: INSPIRE Data Specification on Cadastral Parcels - Guidelines v3.0.1, 2010-04-26
- Degree: Compliant
